Chapter Eleven

Lily jerked awake to the sound of muffled laughter just outside her door, as though someone was trying to keep the noise down but failing miserably. Light was shining through the thin curtains and her body was stiff enough that she was sure she’d been asleep for several hours, apparently in the same tightly curled position. She remembered her dreams with a shocking clarity, the heartache of them something she brought with her into the waking day. It was a kind of torture to keep dreaming of Connor night after night, her brain scrolling through their relationship as though determined to remind her of all she’d lost, all she’d thrown away.

Groaning softly she rolled over onto her back and tried to stretch the stiffness out of her muscles before she glanced at the glowing face of her watch. She had to look at it twice before it really made any sense in her sleep fogged brain. She’d slept the clock around, it was four o’clock in the afternoon and she’d crashed just after midnight. That explained the cramping emptiness in her belly and why her brain felt slightly disconnected from her body.

She swung her legs over the side of the bed and picked up the cheap smart phone she’d bought. After double checking the time, yep she really had slept for that long, she checked on Cora’s social media sites and the blog she’d started for Lily. Worryingly none of them contained any updates. Pushing back her hair she gave into the urge to check on Michelle. Her blog contained photo’s of the dig site but nothing that hinted at what she was actually looking for. No mention of Pierre and more importantly, nothing about her surprise visit. She didn’t think the other woman was stupid or careless, but news about her biggest rival coming to her for help would have been hard for her to resist posting.

Finally she checked on Dylan again, searching the site for any of his posts. The familiar cartoon fox popped up and with shaking hands she played the video. She watched as Popeye and his girlfriend Olive sailed off into the sunset, the jaunty theme tune playing in the background. The footage was old and grainy, made long before high definition had been more than a dream, but the message was clear, at least to her. They were both somewhere safe. Most likely thanks to Connor. She closed her eyes and took several deep breaths to still the trembling that shook her body, beyond grateful that even now, after everything she’d done, he was still protecting the people that mattered to her. By way of reply she posted a video of the pink panther searching around with a spy glass, he’d know it was from her and that she was still searching for a way out.

Connor had no social media presence, like her he was someone who guarded his privacy, but she knew his number, had it memorised in her head. She held her thumb over the screen as she fought the temptation.
